It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye: A Guide to Adhesive Disposal
If you’re like us, sometimes you lie in bed at night with all kinds of questions rattling around in your brain. Who decided on the order of the alphabet? Why is “W” called “double-U” when it looks more like two Vs? And, of course, the big one: How do you dispose of liquid adhesives? We know, we know… it’s exhausting trying to find all the answers! While we may not have all of the answers to life’s secrets, we can definitely help with that last question.
Throwing out glue isn’t as easy as tossing a candy wrapper. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Here’s your go-to guide for safely and responsibly bidding farewell to adhesives in a way that keeps both Mother Earth and your workspace happy.
Liquid II Solid
When it comes to liquid glue, the rule is to solidify before you say goodbye. According to the SDS (that’s Safety Data Sheet for you non-glue nerds), liquid adhesive doesn’t fall under the “hazardous waste” category in the U.S. (thanks, EPA!). However, that doesn’t mean you can just pour it down the drain.
Dry It Out: Spread the adhesive on some cardboard or paper or absorb it with an inert material (think sand or cat litter) until it’s no longer liquid.
Dispose Responsibly: Once dried, the adhesive can go into an approved landfill. Check with local or state authorities first, as they may have specific requirements.
Empty Containers Matter Too: Even if the glue is gone, those containers still carry the same warnings. Treat any leftovers carefully; if the container has residue, let it dry before tossing it out.
We’ve Come to the End of The Road, Hot Melt Glue
Hot melt glue disposal is just a tad trickier, so pay close attention here. First, do not release hot melt glue into the environment—it’s not exactly nature’s best friend.
Contain It: Once you’re finished with your hot melt glue, make sure any remnants are in a secure, closed container.
Follow Local Rules: Disposal rules for hot melt glue vary, so consult your local and national regulations. Better safe than sorry, right?
Let’s Not Wait ‘Til the Leftovers Run Dry
Got a small amount of adhesive left in the bucket or container? Here’s the deal: treat it like you would leftover paint.
Pour and Air Dry: Pour out any remaining liquid, then leave the container open in a well-ventilated space until the glue fully dries.
Bin It Up: Once dried, these containers can go in your standard landfill waste bins, just like empty water-based paint cans.
Doin’ Just Fine with Adhesive Disposal
And there you have it—saying goodbye to adhesives doesn’t have to be hard or messy. If you’re ever unsure, always remember to dry it out and then give CGM a call. We’re always here to help you keep it clean and green. Happy Gluing!
